World Without Waste | Plastic Recovery Hut | Coca-Cola PK

As part of ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution in Pakistan’ project, WWF and Coca-Cola have partnered to install a plastic bottles collection hut across three malls of Pakistan from October 12 till November 12, 2019. The said Plastic Hut is first of its kind in the beverage sector to promote recovery and recycling of plastic bottles of beverages, while also getting a chance for visitors to win prizes through lucky draws daily. The launch ceremony of the Plastic Hut was held on October 12 at Packages Mall in Pakistan, where it was inaugurated by Fahad Qadir, Director Public Affairs & Communications at Coca-Cola Pak & Afg Region and Hammad Naqi, Director General WWF Pakistan.  This is in line with Coca-Cola Pakistan’s initiative entitled ‘Pakistan Without Waste’.


In 2018, Coca-Cola today announced an industry-first goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle or can it sells globally by 2030. The company and its global partners will tackle the ambitious goal, which is part of a holistic plan called “World Without Waste,” through a renewed focus on the entire packaging lifecycle – from how bottles and cans are designed and made, to how they’re recycled and repurposed. “Consumers today expect companies like ours to be leaders and help make a litter-free world possible as they care for the planet. Through our ‘Pakistan Without Waste’ vision, we are investing in our planet and in in our packaging to help make the world’s packaging problem a thing of the past. This Plastic Hut is just one the many activities we have aligned for our efforts towards promoting plastic recovery and recycling,” commented Fahad Qadir, Director Public Affairs & Communications at Coca-Cola. 


"It is due to our negligence on proper disposal and recycling of plastics that the Indus River has now been declared as the second most polluted river in the world. This proves that plastic pollution is not a first world issue, it has emerged as a global issue. WWF- Pakistan, therefore, acknowledges the need to create awareness among citizens; this plastic recovery facility is just one of many manifestations. With support from environmentally conscious partners such as The Coca-Cola Foundation, WWF will continue to initiate more campaigns like this to promote cleaner Pakistan." - Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General WWF-Pakistan.


The response has been great so far; over 754 bottles of PET packaging have been collected over the course of 5 days so far which is around 21.25 kgs of recyclable waste. 177 prizes have been given out with 14 daily draw winners and 5 mega draw winners. The public enthusiasm is great so far!

According to an ongoing research by WWF, it has been discovered based on sample size that over 70 percent of the households don’t segregate their waste which ultimately leads to lesser chances of it being recycled. Based on findings shared by Bureau of International Recycling, a whopping 91 percent of plastic waste is not recycled, eventually ending up landfill or our oceans. However, recycling is a $200 billion industry and in most countries, recycling is perceived to be a governmental issue rather than a personal responsibility. More than 10 years ago, Coca-Cola South Africa funded and co-created the PET Recycling Company (PETCO) which is an industry body that promotes and regulates the recycling of PET material after initial use and has partnered with recyclers to create new products made from disposed PET material. As a result of PETCO’s efforts, the country has seen an increase in recycling from single digits in 2000 to 65 percent in 2017 – close to European rates and rates that exceed United States recycling by more than 20 percent.
